Made for Danish TV, this film is a psychological portrait of the composer Carl Nielsen, who, in turbulent times at the turn of the 20th century and during the First World War, created symphonic works that are part of Denmark’s cultural heritage but are little known outside his home country. How did this son of a provincial house painter go on to compose songs that are still universally known and well loved in Denmark today?

A montage of documentary scenes and nature footage shot at original locations around Denmark, musical performances staged for the film, and dramatic scenes with Danish actor Tue Hoé, who personifies Carl Nielsen and voices excerpts from his letters and diaries.

Featuring the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Danish String Quartet, Fabio Luisi, Herbert Blomstedt.
